GRAD CASTLE, GORIČKO

The castle building is one of the most extensive feudal complexes in Slovenia. The territory around today's castle was included in the Hungarian state by King Bela III. In 1183 he donated it to the Cistercian monastery in Monošter. It soon became the property of various Hungarian feudal families, who continuously ruled the area from Grad, then Gornja Lendava, and all the way to Murska Sobota. The castle is something quite special because of the unusual shape of the inner courtyard with it higher western and lower eastern level, which is due to the shape of the hill on which the castle stands. The castle courtyard, surrounded by towering arcades, is encircled by a pentagonal floor plan of the perimeter tracts, which reach in some places to the first and in other places to the second floor. Although the design has retained some elements of the medieval castle core, today as a whole it shows a Baroque image from the 17th century. It also includes parts from the 16th and 18th centuries (1751), which is especially true of the chapel and the bell tower. Več o gradu

THE 700-YEAR-OLD CHESTNUT TREE

This ancient chestnut tree grows in an orchard next to Sidonija Čahuk's house. It measures 940 cm in circumference, 299 cm in diameter, and is about 20 metres tall. Estimating its age is extremely difficult, with some believing that it is at least 700 years old and others holding the opinion that—given its current condition—it is no more than 500 years old.

The tree grows on a clearing, in an elevated position, making it is visible from afar. Locals say that this chestnut was already marked as a point in military maps in the Austrian-Hungary era. This chestnut tree is much more vital than its neighbour, as so far, the old chestnut has successfully resisted chestnut cancer, fatal to many chestnuts. This venerable chestnut still bears annually, but slightly less than centuries ago. It used to yield over 200 kg of chestnuts, but now only 50 to 60 kg.

SERDIŠKI BREG

At 416 m above sea level, Serdiški breg—or Rdeči breg as it is also known—is the second highest peak in Goričko, after Sotinski breg. At one time it was even considered the highest, but repeated geodetic measurements showed that this was not the case. At the top, from which, just like from Sotinski breg, there is a beautiful view, there is a log cabin TD Rogašovci, and next to it is a vineyard sign in the shape of a pyramid, which marks the top. There are several antennae owned by amateur radio operators from nearby. Various tourist, sports, firefighters’ and cultural activities take place on Serdiški Breg throughout the year. The Rogašovci Tourism Association organises hikes to the summit several times a year.
